Why I gave my team the day off...
Sep 03, 2021I’ve got to be honest with you, leading through constant upheaval is challenging and not really something I ever envisioned myself having to do.
I don’t think any of us really do? I mean, we know there will be challenging moments but I don’t think anyone could have seen the curve ball life has thrown at us in the last 18 months.
Something I’ve been reflecting on is how my personal work habits during lockdown seem to have me working the entire time and then that expectation spills over to my team.
The thing is, I'm working with real people who are also struggling with lockdown in different ways… and so are you.
I was reminded of this one morning when I felt like rubbish, I jumped on a Zoom meeting with my team and it was like looking in a mirror. I could tell they were feeling exactly how I felt! We were all processing our situation - so I decided to give us all the day off.
I know that if I'm waking up in the morning and struggling to find the energy and really dragging myself through the day, I am most certainly not the only one who feels this way.
If you're a business owner who feels the same, you might actually need to give yourself headspace, so that you have the capacity to hold space for others and lead the way.
Leadership is top down.
We set the expectation. We set the culture. We set the atmosphere.
I know these decisions aren’t possible for everyone but during these wild times, it’s critical that we do what we can to support our team. Leadership looks different for everybody but ultimately, our people matter most, don’t they?
This is a reminder to check in with them and be flexible in your approach - after all, we are all processing a new normal. For some, it is a little more ideal and for others, it’s isolating.
I know people probably think it’s a ‘line’ when I suggest using my free 20 minute video clarity call to talk about anything, but I truly mean it. Sometimes we just need some company, optimism or an ear to hear us.
Don’t overthink it. If you’d like a dose of positivity and problem solving, I am here.
